Zipper Lines Sudoku: Rules and Solving Strategy

Zipper Lines use an odd-length path with a central cell. Every pair equally distant from that center must add to the center digit.

Pair cells outward from the center

Zipper Lines Sudoku keeps the normal rule that every row, column, and 3x3 box contains 1 through 9 exactly once. Each Zipper Line has an odd number of cells and one clear center. The first pair of cells on either side of the center must sum to the center digit. The next outward pair must equal the same total, and so on until the ends of the line. For a seven-cell line with center value 8, all three mirrored pairs sum to 8. Possible pairs include 1 and 7, 2 and 6, or 3 and 5, with either order allowed. The center itself is not included in those pair sums. A line may bend, so count positions along the path rather than using geometric distance across the grid. Shapedoku's classic boards use shapes without numerical values and therefore do not include sum lines, but its Notes habit transfers well to tracking mirrored candidate pairs.

Use the center to generate complement pairs

Once the center digit is known, every other line cell has a complement. If the center is 9 and one member of a mirrored pair is 4, the opposite member must be 5. Candidate lists should be synchronized even before either value is placed. Suppose one side can contain 1, 2, 4, or 7 and the center is 8. Its partner can only contain 7, 6, 4, or 1 respectively, subject to the partner's row, column, and box. If the partner cannot contain 6 or 7, then 1 and 2 disappear from the first side. The center must be at least 2 because two positive Sudoku digits cannot sum to 1. Other bounds depend on whether mirrored cells see each other. If a pair shares a unit, equal addends are impossible, so a center of 8 cannot use 4 and 4 for that pair. Test each pair against all ordinary Sudoku restrictions rather than using sums alone.

Work backward from pair sums to the center

The line also works in reverse. If one mirrored pair is solved as 3 and 6, the center is 9, which fixes the target sum for every other pair. If a pair is not solved but has only two possible totals, the center is restricted to those values. Compare several pairs to find the intersection of their possible sums. One pair might allow centers 6, 7, or 9, while another allows 7 or 8; together they force the center to 7. Overlapping Zipper Lines can be even stronger because a shared cell may need a different complement on each line. A value removed by one line can settle a pair on the other. Standard units often choose the order of a complement pair. If two mirrored cells must be 2 and 7 and one cell's box already contains 2, the placement is immediate. After every zipper deduction, rescan the affected rows, columns, and boxes for singles and subsets. Sum logic finds the pairs, while classic Sudoku decides where each member belongs.

  1. Identify the exact center and pair cells by equal path distance from it.
  2. List the possible sums of each mirrored pair when the center is unknown.
  3. Intersect those sums to restrict or solve the center digit.
  4. When the center is known, give every candidate its required complement.
  5. Remove pairings that violate rows, columns, boxes, or another line.
  6. Return to classic Sudoku logic after each pair or center becomes fixed.
