Broken Wing Sudoku: Guardians and Single-Digit Chains

The Idea Behind a Broken Wing

Pick one digit and look only at the cells where it can still go. Sometimes those cells form a chain of strong links, where each link says the digit must be in one of two places. If such a chain tries to close into a loop with an odd number of links, it cannot be colored consistently, because there is no legal way to place the digit around it. That impossible loop is the broken wing.

Reality saves the day through a guardian: an extra cell that also holds the candidate and sits so that it breaks the loop. Because the loop cannot exist on its own, at least one guardian must actually contain the digit. That single guarantee is the engine of broken wing sudoku.

How the Guardian Creates Eliminations

Once you know at least one guardian holds the digit, any cell that can see every guardian at once cannot hold that digit itself, because whichever guardian is true would attack it. So you eliminate the candidate from every cell that shares a house with all guardians. In broken wing sudoku the eliminations are rock solid, since they rest on plain contradiction rather than guesswork.

• Choose a single digit and map all its remaining candidate cells.
• Trace strong links to find a loop that would need odd coloring.
• Identify the guardian cell or cells that keep the loop from being illegal.
• Remove the digit from any cell that sees all guardians.

Broken Wing Sudoku Versus Simple Coloring

The technique is a close relative of coloring and the better-known X-Wing family, but it earns its own name because of the guardian twist. Ordinary coloring finds cells that see two oppositely colored candidates; broken wing sudoku instead exploits a loop that is one link short of legal. Both are single-digit methods, and both are wonderful for quietly clearing candidates before you commit to any placement.

If the loop has more than one guardian, the elimination targets shrink, because a cell must now see all of them. Fewer guardians mean stronger eliminations, so the tightest broken wings are the most valuable.

Practicing With Shapes
