Gurth's symmetrical placement is a solver's shortcut that turns a puzzle's visual symmetry into concrete digit placements, often filling a whole diagonal or the center in a single stroke.

What Gurth's Symmetrical Placement Means

Many hand-made puzzles are built so their given clues form a symmetric picture. The most common kind has 180-degree rotational symmetry: spin the grid half a turn and the pattern of clues lands back on itself. Gurth's symmetrical placement says that when a symmetric puzzle also has exactly one solution, the finished grid inherits a matching symmetry, expressed as a fixed pairing of the digits.

Concretely, there is a mapping that swaps digits in pairs, such as 1 with 9, 2 with 8, 3 with 7, and 4 with 6, while one digit maps to itself. Two cells that map onto each other under the symmetry must hold partner digits. This is the quiet promise behind gurth's symmetrical placement, and once you trust it, whole regions open up.

The Center and the Diagonal

For rotational symmetry, the single cell that maps to itself is the center. Because it must equal its own partner, it can only hold the self-paired digit, which in the classic mapping is the middle value. That one deduction is often enough to start a chain reaction across the board.
