How to Solve Extreme Sudoku Without Guessing

First, accept that scanning will not finish it

On easy and medium boards you can often place numbers just by scanning. On an Extreme board that runs out quickly. The moment scanning stalls, switch modes. Extreme puzzles are solved by working with candidates, the small notes of what could go in each empty cell, not by staring at the grid hoping a number appears.

Fill in full candidates

Pencil in every candidate for every empty cell. It feels slow, but on hard boards it is faster overall, because the patterns you need are invisible without it. Shapedoku has a Notes mode and smart cleanup that keep this tidy, so the board never turns to noise.

Work the ladder of techniques in order

1. Clear all naked singles and hidden singles first, then re-mark.
2. Look for locked candidates, where a digit in a box is confined to one row or column.
3. Hunt naked and hidden pairs and triples to thin the candidates.
4. Try single-digit patterns next, an X-Wing, a Skyscraper, then a Swordfish.
5. Bring in the wings, the XY-Wing and XYZ-Wing, when pairs run dry.
6. Reach for coloring or a Unique Rectangle only when the simpler tools stall.

Slow down at the choke points

Extreme boards usually have one or two moments where progress dries up completely. That is the signal to slow down, not to guess. Recount the candidates for a single digit across the whole grid. The hardest step is almost always a pattern in one digit that you skimmed past. Guessing may finish a puzzle, but it teaches nothing and it can send you down a false path for twenty minutes.

Practice a rung below your ceiling

If Extreme feels like a wall, spend a week on Hard and get fast at pairs, locked candidates and the X-Wing. Then Extreme stops being a different game and becomes the same game with one extra pattern per board. Fluency at the basics is what makes the hardest boards solvable.
