How to Solve Hard Sudoku Puzzles

Squeeze every easy move first

Before reaching for anything fancy, exhaust the basics. Scan for cells that can only hold one value, and for values that fit only one cell in a row, column or box. On a hard puzzle these run out quickly, but they always come first, and clearing them makes the harder logic easier to see.

Write down your candidates

The real turning point on hard puzzles is candidates, the small notes of every value that could still go in a cell. Once the obvious moves dry up, fill in candidates for the empty cells. It feels slow, but it converts a fuzzy board into a precise one, and almost every advanced technique works by spotting patterns among candidates. Notes exist for exactly this, so use them freely.

Hunt for hidden and naked pairs

With candidates written in, look for two cells in the same unit that share the same two candidates and nothing else. That is a naked pair, and it means those two values are locked to those two cells, so you can erase them from every other cell in the unit. The mirror image, a hidden pair, is two values that appear as candidates in only two cells of a unit. Both are the workhorses of hard solving, and spotting them clears the way for everything else.

Use pointing pairs to prune

Sometimes a value in a box is limited to a single row or column within that box. When that happens, the value cannot appear in that same row or column anywhere outside the box. Removing it there often unlocks a cell you were stuck on. These pointing pairs are subtle but common on hard boards.

Step up to single digit patterns

The hardest puzzles need patterns that span the grid, like the X Wing, where a single value forms a rectangle of candidates across two rows and two columns and lets you eliminate that value elsewhere. If you have never met these, learn one at a time and practice it until you can spot it. Each new pattern you add is another door out of a stuck board.

Stay calm and never guess

• Keep your candidates accurate. One stray note can send you down a wrong path.
• Work one technique at a time rather than scanning for everything at once.
• When you make an elimination, look right around it. One removal often triggers the next.
• If you feel the urge to guess, step back instead. A real Sudoku never requires it.
• Take a break if you stall. Fresh eyes beat brute force every time.
