Rossini Sudoku: Rules and Solving Strategy

Rossini Sudoku adds arrows around the edge of the grid. Each arrow tells you that the first three digits from that edge form a strict rising or falling sequence.

Read each arrow as an ordered three-cell sequence

Rossini Sudoku follows the standard rule that every row, column, and 3x3 box contains 1 through 9 exactly once. Arrows outside the grid add order information to the first three cells seen from that edge. The arrow indicates the direction of increase, with the largest of the three digits lying toward the arrow's point. In practical terms, each marked edge gives you a strict three-cell inequality such as A less than B less than C. The three digits do not need to be consecutive. A sequence such as 1, 4, 8 is perfectly valid if it follows the required direction. The arrow applies only to those first three edge cells, not the whole row or column. Many Rossini puzzles are fully marked, meaning an edge without an arrow tells you that its first three cells are not strictly increasing and not strictly decreasing. Because publishing conventions can differ, confirm that negative rule before using missing arrows. Shapedoku itself has no ordered numerical values, so Rossini is naturally a numbered Sudoku variant rather than a shape-based rule.

Use positional bounds before exact candidates

A three-cell increasing sequence has built-in minimum and maximum ranges. In A less than B less than C, the first cell cannot be 8 or 9 because two larger digits still need to follow. The middle cell cannot be 1 or 9, and the last cell cannot be 1 or 2. More precise bounds appear as soon as one candidate narrows. If C is 5, then A and B must both come from 1 through 4 in increasing order. If B is 7, A must be below 7 and C must be 8 or 9. Apply these order bounds together with row, column, and box restrictions. A candidate may be locally legal in its cell yet impossible because it leaves too few larger or smaller digits for the rest of the sequence. This support check is one of the fastest ways to solve Rossini openings. Work from the most constrained arrow first, especially one whose three cells already contain a given or intersect a busy box.

Use missing arrows carefully when the puzzle is fully marked

A negative Rossini edge does not tell you the exact order of its three digits. It tells you what the order is not. If the first two edge cells are 2 and 5, the third cell cannot be greater than 5 because that would make the triple strictly increasing. It may be below 5, subject to Sudoku rules. Similarly, if the first two cells are 8 and 4, the third cannot be below 4 in a fully marked puzzle because that would complete a strictly decreasing triple. These negative clues become stronger late in the solve when two of the three cells are known. They also interact well with positive arrows from the opposite edge of the same row or column. Keep the two three-cell windows separate because they may overlap only on longer logical chains, not by rule. After an ordering elimination, return to ordinary singles and subsets. Rossini is easiest when inequalities narrow ranges first and classic Sudoku decides exact digits second, rather than trying to solve each arrow as a self-contained mini puzzle.

  1. Confirm whether the puzzle uses the fully marked negative Rossini rule.
  2. Translate each arrow into a strict three-cell increasing order toward the arrow point.
  3. Apply positional bounds to the low, middle, and high cells before listing exact values.
  4. Remove a candidate if it leaves no valid smaller or larger values for the other sequence cells.
  5. When negative constraints apply, use two known cells to forbid completion of a monotonic triple.
  6. Finish each deduction with a fresh row, column, and box scan.
