Samurai Sudoku, Explained

Samurai sudoku looks genuinely intimidating at first glance, a sprawling cluster of grids that fills a whole page, but it is really five ordinary Sudoku puzzles cleverly joined, and the joints are the entire key to solving it.

Five grids in one

A Samurai Sudoku is built from five completely standard nine by nine grids arranged into the shape of a cross. There is one grid in each of the four corners and a fifth grid sitting in the middle, and the central grid overlaps a single corner box of each of the four outer grids. So each of the four outer grids shares its inner corner region, a full three by three box of nine cells, with the central grid that ties everything together. Crucially, every individual grid still follows all the normal Sudoku rules entirely on its own, exactly as it would if you cut it out and solved it alone: each of its rows, columns and boxes must contain one through nine with no repeats. That single fact is the great reassurance hiding inside the intimidating layout, because it means you already know precisely how to solve each of the five pieces. The only genuinely new element the puzzle introduces is the way it wires those five familiar pieces together at their overlapping corners. Seen that way, the daunting size on the page is mostly an illusion of scale, since you are never truly solving more than one ordinary grid at any single moment; you are simply choosing which of the five deserves your attention next.

The overlaps are the whole trick

The cells that sit inside an overlapping box belong to two different grids at the very same time, and that means they must simultaneously satisfy the rules of both grids at once, not just one. That double duty is precisely what makes a Samurai puzzle solvable and genuinely enjoyable, rather than just five entirely separate puzzles that happen to have been printed close together on one page for convenience. A value you place while working through the central grid instantly becomes a fresh, free clue for one of the corner grids, and, in exactly the same way, a deduction you make in a far corner feeds straight back into the center and can unlock it. The shared boxes function as bridges between the grids, and information flows across those bridges in both directions continuously, all the way from the first placement to the last, which is what gives the whole puzzle its satisfying sense of interconnection.

A short worked example of the flow

Say the top left grid and the central grid share the central grid's own top left box, as the layout requires. Now suppose that while you are patiently solving the top left grid, you manage to deduce that its bottom right corner cell, which physically sits inside that shared overlapping box, must be a 7. Because that exact same cell simultaneously belongs to the central grid as part of its top left box, the central grid immediately knows, for free and with no extra work, that a 7 is now fixed in that position too. That single confirmed 7 might in turn instantly rule out a 7 elsewhere along the central grid's top row or in its top left box, unlocking a placement there that you simply could not make a moment earlier. One deduction, made once but honestly counted twice across two grids at once, and the solve rolls forward.

How to approach it

  1. Treat each of the five grids as its own ordinary Sudoku and clear the easy, obvious placements in every one.
  2. Pay special, deliberate attention to the four overlap boxes, since any progress there helps two grids at once.
  3. When one grid stalls completely, move to a neighbor, because a placement over there often unblocks the shared box.
  4. Keep calmly cycling between the grids, letting each newly solved cell ripple outward across the overlaps.
  5. Handle candidates in the overlaps with extra care, always remembering they must satisfy both grids together.

Samurai Sudoku rewards all the same skills as a normal single puzzle but on a distinctly grander scale, and it adds the particular pleasure of watching hard won progress in one far corner cascade satisfyingly across the entire cross. It feels much more like a long, steady marathon than a quick sprint, and finishing a whole one carries a real, earned sense of accomplishment that a single ordinary grid cannot quite match on its own.
