Sandwich Sudoku: Rules and Solving Strategy
Sandwich Sudoku adds clues outside the grid. Each clue tells you the sum of the digits placed between 1 and 9 in that row or column.
Understand what each sandwich clue measures
Sandwich Sudoku keeps the standard rule that every row, column, and 3x3 box contains the digits 1 through 9 once. Numbers outside the grid add a second layer. A clue beside a row gives the sum of all digits positioned strictly between 1 and 9 in that row. The same rule applies to clues above or below columns. The bread digits 1 and 9 are not included in the total. If a row begins 9, 3, 4, 1, the sandwich sum for those four positions is 7 because only 3 and 4 sit between the bread. The digits outside the sandwich do not matter to that clue. A zero clue means 1 and 9 must be adjacent, since no digit can sit between them. Shapedoku itself uses nine unordered shapes and classic rules, so it does not use arithmetic sandwich clues. Still, the careful row, column, and box scanning practiced in Shapedoku transfers directly to the variant.
Use clue size to restrict the bread positions
Begin by considering where 1 and 9 can sit. Small sums usually suggest a short sandwich or a combination of small digits, while large sums need more cells or larger interior digits. Do not assume that one clue determines a unique distance. A clue of 3 could place only the digit 3 between the bread, or it could place 1 and 2 between them if those were allowed inside, but 1 is itself bread and cannot be an interior digit. The legal single interior is therefore 3, while two interior digits could be 1 and 2 only in an ordinary sum problem, not here. This illustrates why combinations must respect the special roles of 1 and 9. List possible sets using digits 2 through 8, then compare how many cells the candidate bread positions leave between them. A clue of 35 forces every digit from 2 through 8 between 1 and 9, so the bread must occupy the two ends of the line in some order.
Combine sum combinations with ordinary Sudoku logic
After narrowing possible sandwich lengths, use the crossing boxes and lines to decide orientation and placement. Suppose a row clue allows 1 and 9 only in columns two and seven. If the box containing column two already has a 1, that endpoint must be 9 and the other must be 1. Then list the digits required between them and remove combinations that conflict with placed values in the five interior cells. Partial sums are useful once some interior digits are known. If the clue is 18 and confirmed interior digits already total 11, the remaining interior cells must total 7. Candidate pairs such as 2 and 5 or 3 and 4 can then be checked against their columns and boxes. Keep arithmetic possibilities separate from final placements. A combination can satisfy the clue while still failing Sudoku rules. On paper, write small candidate sums beside the line rather than crowding every cell. After each placement, rescan the entire row or column because changing one endpoint can redefine the whole sandwich.
- Mark every possible location for 1 and 9 in the clued line.
- Count how many interior cells each bread pairing creates.
- List combinations from digits 2 through 8 that match the clue and available length.
- Remove combinations that conflict with placed digits or candidate restrictions.
- Use boxes and crossing lines to decide the order of 1 and 9.
- Recalculate the remaining sum after every confirmed interior digit.
