It is about technique, not just clues

People assume a hard puzzle simply has fewer starting clues. Clue count matters, but the real driver of difficulty is which techniques you must use. An easy board can be solved with simple singles. A hard board forces you into pairs, chains and careful elimination before it gives anything up.

Easy

Easy puzzles are built so a steady scan is enough. You can nearly always find a group with one gap or a clear single. They are perfect for learning the flow, warming up, or a relaxed few minutes. Nobody should feel stuck for long on an Easy board.

Medium

Medium boards ask you to keep notes and hunt for hidden singles. You will pause to think, but the path is always there once you look. This is the level where most players spend their time, because it balances challenge and comfort.

Hard

Hard puzzles reward real technique. You will need naked pairs, pointing pairs and disciplined notes. Progress comes in bursts, where one clever deduction unlocks a run of easy placements. Finishing a Hard board feels genuinely earned.

Extreme

Extreme is a serious test for confident solvers. Expect long stretches where nothing is obvious and you must chain several deductions together. Every Extreme puzzle in Shapedoku is checked by a solver so it always has exactly one valid solution, which means it is hard but never unfair. If it feels impossible, the answer is a technique you have not applied yet, not a broken board.

Which level should you play?
