Sudoku solves overlapping sets of symbols
Classic Sudoku uses a 9 by 9 grid divided into rows, columns, and 3 by 3 boxes. Every one of those units must contain the digits 1 through 9 exactly once. The digits act as labels rather than quantities, so arithmetic is unnecessary. A solver scans for missing symbols, removes candidates that conflict with existing placements, and gradually moves from singles into pairs, locked candidates, fish patterns, wings, and chains. Akari solves illumination and line of sight

A bulb illuminates horizontally and vertically until its light reaches a black cell or the edge of the board. Every white cell must eventually be illuminated, but no bulb may illuminate another bulb. A numbered black cell tells you exactly how many bulbs sit in the orthogonally adjacent cells around it. This creates two layers of logic. Local number clues control the immediate neighborhood, while long lines of sight control where bulbs can coexist. A black clue marked 0 immediately forbids bulbs from all adjacent white cells. A clue whose remaining required bulbs equals its remaining available neighbors forces those neighbors to contain bulbs. Elsewhere, an unlit white cell may have only one possible bulb position capable of reaching it, producing a deduction even without a nearby number. Akari therefore feels less like filling a complete symbol grid and more like constructing a safe lighting plan.
Choose between candidate logic and spatial coverage
Sudoku and Akari both reward elimination, but the objects you eliminate are different. In Sudoku, you remove possible values from cells. In Akari, you remove possible bulb positions and possible illumination routes. Sudoku has a highly regular structure: every puzzle uses rows, columns, and boxes in the same way. Akari boards can vary more in the placement of black cells and numbered clues, so each puzzle develops its own geometry.
