Sudoku vs Nurikabe: Placement Logic and Shading Logic Compared
Sudoku completes sets of symbols. Nurikabe divides a grid into numbered white islands and one connected black wall, creating a very different style of logic.
Sudoku narrows symbols until every cell is determined
Classic Sudoku begins with some fixed symbols and many empty cells. Every row, column, and 3x3 box must contain all nine symbols exactly once, so every placement removes possibilities from other cells in those units. Shapedoku keeps these rules while replacing numbers with a triangle, hexagon, circle, crystal, heart, diamond, square, crescent moon, and lotus flower. The change is visual rather than mathematical. You still solve through scanning, candidate elimination, subsets, and more advanced patterns when needed. Notes are useful because an empty cell can have several possible shapes, and the puzzle gradually becomes easier to read as those possibilities disappear. Sudoku is therefore mainly a placement puzzle. You are building one complete Latin-style arrangement while preserving the no-repeat rules of three overlapping unit types.
Nurikabe grows islands while preserving one black wall
Nurikabe begins with numbered clue cells. Each number belongs to a connected group of white cells whose total size equals that clue. Every white island contains exactly one numbered clue, separate islands are divided by black cells, all black cells must connect into one continuous wall, and the wall cannot contain a solid 2x2 block of black cells. A clue 1 is already a complete one-cell island, so its orthogonal neighbors must be black. When an island reaches the size printed in its clue, every unused orthogonal cell around it must also be black because the island cannot grow further. The opposite kind of deduction comes from the wall: if three cells of a 2x2 square are already black, the fourth must stay white to prevent an illegal 2x2 block. You are constantly balancing local island sizes against the global requirement that the black area stays connected.
Use separation and connectivity as Nurikabe's candidate system
Nurikabe does not usually need pencil candidates in the Sudoku sense, but uncertain cells still have two states: island or wall. A useful deduction appears when one cell lies between two numbered clues in a straight line with one cell separating them. That middle cell cannot be white, because it would connect two clues into one island, so it must be black. Another important habit is to identify cells that no unfinished island could ever reach. Those cells must belong to the wall. At the same time, avoid creating isolated black pockets that can no longer connect to the main wall. This global connectivity check plays a role similar to contradiction testing in difficult Sudoku: a locally tempting move may fail because of its distant consequence. Choose Sudoku if you enjoy managing several possible symbols per cell and combining overlapping units.
