Sudoku vs Shikaku: Which Grid Puzzle Should You Play

Sudoku fills every cell with one of nine symbols. Shikaku divides every cell into rectangles whose areas must match the clues inside them.

Sudoku narrows values inside fixed units

A classic Sudoku has a permanent structure: nine rows, nine columns, and nine 3 by 3 boxes. Every unit must contain each of the nine symbols exactly once. The solver never changes the borders of the board. Instead, the work is deciding what belongs inside each empty cell. A candidate disappears when the same symbol already occupies a peer cell or when a logical pattern proves that the symbol must be used elsewhere. Shapedoku makes the symbolic nature of Sudoku especially clear by replacing the numbers with nine glowing shapes. A heart and a lotus do not have numerical size or arithmetic meaning. They are simply two different symbols that must each occur once per row, column, and box. Sudoku therefore rewards careful candidate tracking, consistent scanning, and the ability to combine information from several overlapping units. A difficult puzzle may require long chains of consequences, but the framework remains the same from the opening move to the final cell.

Shikaku discovers the regions instead of receiving them

Shikaku starts with a rectangular grid containing several numbered clue cells. Your task is to divide the entire grid into rectangles. Every rectangle must contain exactly one clue, and the number in that clue must equal the rectangle's area in cells. A clue 6 might belong to a 1 by 6, 2 by 3, 3 by 2, or 6 by 1 rectangle when the board has enough space. Nearby clues and grid edges remove many of those possibilities. This makes factor pairs the natural candidate system of Shikaku. For each clue, imagine every rectangle of the required area that can contain that clue without also containing another clue. If only one rectangle remains, its borders are forced. You can also reason from uncovered cells. If one empty area can be reached by only a single clue's possible rectangles, that clue must expand into the area. The final answer is not a set of values but a complete partition of the board.

Compare cell candidates with rectangle candidates

The two puzzles share an important habit: do not guess when several options remain. In Sudoku, preserve all legal candidates until another unit removes one. In Shikaku, preserve all legal rectangle shapes until another clue, border, or uncovered cell rules them out. The difference is scale. A Sudoku candidate belongs to one cell, while a Shikaku candidate can cover many cells at once. That means a single eliminated Shikaku rectangle may change several neighboring clues immediately. Sudoku is usually stronger for players who enjoy a deep library of reusable named techniques. Shikaku is attractive when you prefer visual packing, factors, and region boundaries. Shapedoku offers the Sudoku style with a calmer visual identity, using form and color together so the nine symbols stay distinct without relying on color alone. An Easy or Medium Shapedoku puzzle is a good place to practice disciplined elimination before moving to Hard or Extreme. Shikaku needs less pencil notation, but lightly sketching possible rectangle edges can serve the same purpose: preserve uncertain structure without committing too early.

  2. In Shikaku, list the factor pairs and placements that can create each clue's required rectangle.
  3. Remove any Shikaku rectangle that crosses the grid edge or contains another clue.
  4. Use uncovered cells to determine which remaining clue must claim them.
  5. Avoid committing to one candidate cell or rectangle while several legal options remain.
