Sudoku requires the digits 1 through 9 exactly once in every row, column, and 3x3 box. This gives a complete set in each unit, so missing-digit scans are powerful. If a row contains eight different values, the ninth is automatic. Harder puzzles keep several candidates per cell and use subsets, locked candidates, fish, wings, and chains to remove them. You first reason about the range the compartment can occupy, then place individual values. If a three-cell compartment cannot use 1, 2, 8, or 9 because of row and column restrictions, its possible straights may collapse to 3-4-5, 4-5-6, or 5-6-7. Crossing compartments narrow those ranges further. Some black cells contain clue digits; those digits block the cells from the straights while also excluding that value from their row and column. Candidate sets therefore operate at two scales: individual cells and the whole consecutive range of a compartment.

If a four-cell compartment can only be 2-5 or 3-6 and one crossing line already contains 6, the higher range may disappear entirely. Conversely, if every surviving range contains 4, then 4 must appear somewhere in that compartment even if its exact cell is unknown. That reserved-value information can eliminate 4 from other white cells in the same row or column.
