Sudoku vs Tents and Trees: Placement Logic Compared
Sudoku places nine different symbols under no-repeat rules. Tents and Trees places one kind of object under pairing, counting, and no-touch constraints.
Sudoku distributes complete symbol sets across fixed units
Sudoku asks you to fill every cell of a 9x9 grid so that each row, column, and 3x3 box contains every symbol exactly once. The starting clues establish some positions, and the rest follow through elimination. A cell may begin with several candidates, while a row may have several possible positions for one missing symbol. Techniques such as singles, pairs, locked candidates, and chains gradually reduce that uncertainty. Shapedoku uses the same system with nine colorful glowing shapes instead of numbers. The symbols are distinct by form as well as color, but the logic remains classic Sudoku. A placement is valid because the same shape cannot already exist in the cell's row, column, or box. The fixed unit structure makes Sudoku highly reusable: once you learn a technique, you can recognize the same relationship in many different puzzles.
Tents and Trees combines pairing with exact line counts
Tents and Trees starts with fixed tree cells and numbers around the outside of the grid. You place tents in empty cells so that the tents can be matched one-to-one with the trees, with each matched tent orthogonally adjacent to its tree. A tent may be next to other trees as well, depending on the puzzle convention, but the final matching must give every tree exactly one tent. No two tents may touch, even diagonally. The numbers outside each row and column tell you exactly how many tents that line must contain. These rules create immediate eliminations. A row or column with clue 0 contains no tents. A cell that is not orthogonally adjacent to any tree cannot contain a tent. Once a line reaches its required tent count, all remaining undecided cells in that line become grass. A placed tent also removes all eight surrounding cells from tent consideration.
Use remaining capacity the way Sudoku uses missing symbols
A useful solving habit in Tents and Trees is to compare how many tents a line still needs with how many legal cells remain. If a row needs two more tents and has exactly two legal candidate cells, both cells are forced. If a tree has only one available orthogonal neighbor, that cell must contain its tent unless the one-to-one matching creates a conflict elsewhere. The no-touching rule also means a 2x2 group can contain at most one tent, which creates strong grouped deductions across neighboring rows. This resembles Sudoku subset logic. In Sudoku, two symbols confined to two cells become a pair. In Tents and Trees, a required number of tents confined to the same number of legal cells becomes a forced group even before every tree pairing is known. Choose Sudoku if you enjoy symbol identities and candidate sets. Choose Tents and Trees if you prefer spatial occupancy, line totals, and exclusion zones. - Mark every cell in a zero-count row or column as non-tent immediately.
