What Is a Logic Grid Puzzle?
You have probably met a logic grid puzzle in a book of brain teasers: a set of clues, a few categories, and a story to untangle. They are pure deduction, and once you learn the grid method they become wonderfully satisfying.
The setup
A logic grid puzzle gives you several categories, such as people, houses, pets and drinks, and tells you that each item in one category pairs with exactly one item in each other category. Then it hands you a list of clues, like the person in the red house drinks tea, and the cat owner lives next to the dog owner. Your job is to work out the complete set of correct pairings using only the clues.
Why there is a grid
The famous trick for solving these is a grid that crosses every category against every other. Each cell records whether a pair is possible, ruled out, or confirmed. As you read each clue, you mark the grid, placing a cross where a pairing is impossible and a tick where it is certain. The grid turns a swirl of clues into a clear, trackable picture, which is why these puzzles are named after it.
How to solve one
- Read every clue once to get a feel for the categories and the story.
- Mark the direct clues first, ticking confirmed pairs and crossing out impossible ones.
- Use elimination. If a person cannot own three of the four pets, they must own the fourth.
- Watch for ripples. A tick in one place forces crosses across its whole row and column of the grid.
- Keep cycling through the clues, since each new mark often unlocks another.
