What Is a Nonogram? Picture Puzzles Explained

What is a nonogram, and why do so many logic fans quietly adore it? These picture puzzles, also called picross or griddlers, turn pure deduction into art as a hidden image slowly appears on the grid.

The basic idea

A nonogram is a grid with numbers running along the top of each column and down the side of each row, and those numbers are your only starting information. Each set of numbers describes precisely how the filled squares in that particular line are grouped together. Your task is to work out, using nothing but the clues and careful logic, which squares in the grid must be filled in and which must be left blank, until the completed pattern of filled squares finally reveals a small picture. There is genuinely no guessing required in a well made nonogram; every single square can be reasoned out from the numbers with certainty, and the finished image, perhaps a cat, a key, an anchor or a leaf, is the quiet reward waiting at the end for having reasoned it all through patiently and correctly. That neat marriage of rigorous logic and a picture is exactly what gives the puzzle its lasting and slightly addictive charm.

Reading the clues

The numbers listed on any given line describe the runs of consecutive filled squares along that line, always given in their correct order, with at least one blank square guaranteed to separate each run from the next one. A single clue of 4 therefore means one unbroken block of exactly four filled squares sitting somewhere along that line, though you may not yet know where. A clue written as 2 1 means a block of two filled squares, then a gap of at least one blank, then a single lone filled square, in that exact reading order from left to right along a row or from top to bottom down a column. Learning to read these runs fluently and confidently is genuinely the whole of the skill, and the encouraging news for newcomers is that it tends to click into place surprisingly fast once you have carefully worked through just a handful of lines by hand and seen how the logic falls out.

A worked line, square by square

Picture a single row of ten empty squares carrying just the one clue, 8. The required block of eight filled squares could start at the far left, covering squares 1 through 8, or it could sit hard against the far right, covering squares 3 through 10, and at this stage you honestly do not yet know which. But now compare those two extreme positions directly against each other and notice something useful: squares 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 end up filled in both of them, no matter which way the block finally settles. Those six central squares must therefore be filled, and you can confidently mark them in straight away, even before you have pinned down the exact position of the block. You then use the crossing clues coming down from the columns to lock down the two uncertain ends. That simple overlap trick is the true beating heart of nonogram solving.

How to start solving

  1. Look first for lines where the clues nearly fill the whole space, since those leave little freedom and give easy squares.
  2. Fill in the squares that must be filled no matter how the runs still shift around within the line.
  3. Deliberately mark the squares you know are blank, which is every bit as useful and revealing as filling one in.
  4. Cross reference rows against columns constantly, since a filled square from one line tightly constrains the other.
  5. Work all the certainties first and let them cascade outward, in exactly the same spirit you would in Sudoku.
