  • The dot may sit at a cell centre, on an edge between two cells, or at a corner where cells meet, and the symmetry is measured around that exact point.

Take a dot sitting squarely in the centre of a cell. That cell obviously belongs to its galaxy, and symmetry means that for any cell you add to the region, the cell directly opposite through the dot must also join. If you extend the region one cell to the right of the dot, you must also extend it one cell to the left, the mirror through the centre. Now imagine a dot resting on the edge between two cells; the smallest possible galaxy there is exactly those two cells, since each is the 180 degree partner of the other. By always adding cells in symmetric pairs and making sure no two galaxies ever claim the same cell, the regions grow until the whole grid is covered.

Beginner tactics for Spiral Galaxies

  1. Claim the obvious cells. A dot at a cell centre owns that cell, and a dot on an edge owns the two cells it sits between.
  2. Always add in pairs. For each cell you assign to a galaxy, immediately assign its opposite cell through the dot.
  3. Solve the lonely cells. A cell that only one dot can possibly reach with symmetry must belong to that galaxy.
  4. Respect the borders. If assigning a cell would leave its symmetric partner off the grid or already taken, that assignment is illegal.
  5. Fill inward from the edges. Corner and edge cells usually have just one galaxy that can legally include them, which anchors the solve.
