The X-Wing Technique in Sudoku Explained Simply
The X-Wing Sudoku technique is the first advanced pattern most solvers meet, and it feels like magic the first time it clears a board. The name sounds intimidating, but the shape behind it is easier to grasp than it looks.
When you actually need it
You reach for the X-Wing when the simple tools have run dry and the board will not budge. Singles are placed, pairs are marked, and yet no cell offers a forced move. That is the moment this technique earns its place. It belongs to hard and extreme puzzles, where the useful deductions no longer live inside a single row, column or box, but in the relationship between two rows and two columns at once. If you find yourself staring at a fully noted grid with nothing obvious left, and you have already swept for naked and hidden singles, locked candidates and pairs, the X-Wing is one of the first heavier tools to try. It works on a single value at a time, so the trick is to stop looking at the whole board and instead pick one shape and follow only its candidates. Narrowing your attention to one value is what makes the pattern visible at all, and it turns a chaotic grid into something you can actually read.
The pattern to look for
Here is the pattern itself. Fix your attention on one value and find two rows in which that value has exactly two possible cells each, no more and no fewer. Now look at which columns those candidate cells sit in. If the two candidate cells in the first row line up with the two candidate cells in the second row, so that both rows use the very same pair of columns, you have found an X-Wing. The four cells sit at the corners of a rectangle, one in each corner, all sharing the same two columns and spread across two rows. That neat alignment is the whole signature: two rows, two columns, four cells, one value. It is worth saying that the same pattern works with the roles swapped, two columns each holding the value in only two cells that share the same pair of rows. Learn to see the rectangle either way up, and you will start noticing it on boards where you never suspected it was hiding.
Why the elimination works
The reason the X-Wing lets you eliminate candidates is worth understanding, not just memorizing, because the logic makes the pattern impossible to forget. In each of those two rows, the value has to go in one of the two shared columns; there is nowhere else left for it in that row. Follow that through and you find the value must end up in opposite corners of the rectangle, either the top left and bottom right, or the top right and bottom left. It cannot land in both cells of the same column, because a column holds each value only once. Either way the outcome is the same: both of those two columns will receive the value from these two rows. And that is the payoff. Since both columns are already spoken for by the rectangle, the value cannot appear anywhere else in either column. You may erase it as a candidate from every other cell in both columns, which on a stuck board often frees several cells at once and restarts the whole solve.
A worked example with coordinates
Put it in coordinates to make it concrete. Suppose you are tracking one value and you notice that in row 2 it can only go in r2c3 and r2c8, and in row 5 it can only go in r5c3 and r5c8. Those four cells share columns 3 and 8, so they form an X-Wing across rows 2 and 5. The logic guarantees the value will occupy either r2c3 with r5c8, or r2c8 with r5c3, but in every case columns 3 and 8 get the value from these two rows. That means the value can be struck from the rest of column 3, at cells like r1c3, r4c3, r7c3 and r9c3, and from the rest of column 8 as well, at r1c8, r6c8, r8c8 and so on. Often one of those eliminations reduces a cell to a single remaining candidate, handing you a naked single to place immediately. From there the board that had frozen solid begins to unravel, one placement feeding the next, all from a single rectangle you learned to see.
- Pick a value that has been stubborn and refuses to resolve.
- Scan the rows for two of them where the value has exactly two candidate cells.
- Check whether those two rows share the same pair of columns.
- If they do, erase the value from every other cell in those two columns.
- Repeat with the roles of rows and columns swapped to catch the mirrored version.
The X-Wing only appears on some boards, and that is perfectly fine; it is a tool you reach for, not one you force. Run through your simpler techniques first, and turn to the rectangle when genuinely nothing else moves.
