What is clueless sudoku?

Clueless sudoku is a large overlapping puzzle built from nine standard grids arranged in a three by three layout. The trick is that the center box of each of the nine grids together forms a tenth hidden grid. That tenth grid also must obey Sudoku rules, even though it is assembled from pieces scattered across the whole page. Solve the nine visible grids and you simultaneously solve the ghost grid in the middle. Each visible grid is an ordinary Sudoku with its own rows, columns, and boxes, so nothing about the core logic is exotic, and what binds them together is that single hidden layer running through their centers.

How the overlap creates leverage

  • The center cell of grid one becomes the top left cell of the hidden grid.
  • The center cell of grid two becomes the top middle cell of the hidden grid, and so on across all nine.
  • The nine center boxes, taken together, must hold 1 to 9 with no repeats along the hidden grid rows, columns, and box.
  • A value placed deep inside one grid can constrain the center of a distant grid through the hidden layer.

A worked example of the hidden link

Imagine the center cells of the top row of grids resolve to 3, 5, and one unknown value. In the hidden grid those three cells form its top row, which must hold distinct values along that line. If the first two are 3 and 5, the third center cell cannot be 3 or 5, and that restriction may collapse candidates inside a completely different subgrid on the far side of the board. That long distance influence is the heart of clueless sudoku. The puzzle is huge, but the overlap is where the elegant deductions live, because one hidden row can push progress in three directions instead of one.

A plan of attack

  1. Solve the most filled subgrid normally to gather center values as quickly as possible.
  2. Transfer each solved center into the hidden grid and apply its rows, columns, and box constraints.
  3. Feed the hidden grid deductions back into the sparser subgrids that are hardest to open.
  4. Alternate between local and hidden reasoning rather than trying to finish one grid entirely alone.
