What Is a Word Search, and How to Get Faster
A word search is the gentlest puzzle on the shelf, and a lovely way to reset your attention. A couple of small habits make finding words feel effortless.
The idea
A word search hides a list of words inside a grid of letters. The words run horizontally, vertically or diagonally, forwards or backwards, and they often overlap. Your job is to find and mark each one. There is no failure state, which is part of the appeal.
Search by letter, not by word
Rather than scanning the whole grid for a whole word, look for its first letter, or better still an uncommon letter it contains, like a Q, X or Z. Rare letters are easy for your eye to catch, and from there you check the surrounding squares in each direction.
Sweep in lines
Move your eyes in steady rows or columns rather than jumping around. A calm, systematic sweep finds more than a frantic hunt. Word searches are as much about relaxing focus as speed, so let a rhythm carry you.
