What Is Minesweeper, and How to Play It Well

Minesweeper looks like a game of nerve, but most of it is quiet logic. The numbers tell you everything you need, if you read them carefully and in the right order.

The rules in brief

Minesweeper hides a fixed number of mines beneath a grid of covered squares. When you uncover a square that is safe, it reveals a number telling you how many mines touch it among its up to eight neighbours. Uncover a square with no adjacent mines and it shows blank, and the board automatically opens up the empty region around it in a satisfying cascade. Your goal is to uncover every safe square without ever clicking a mine, flagging the mines as you deduce where they hide. The first click is always safe, so the puzzle truly begins from the numbers that appear.

Two deductions that carry you far

Almost all of Minesweeper rests on two simple observations that you apply over and over. First, if a number already touches exactly as many flagged mines as its value, then every other covered neighbour must be safe and can be opened. Second, if a number touches exactly as many covered squares as its value, then every one of those covered squares must be a mine and can be flagged. Alternating between these two rules, satisfy the number, then read the next, clears the large, open stretches of most boards almost automatically.

Reading pairs of numbers

The genuinely interesting logic appears when you compare two neighbouring numbers rather than reading each alone. Suppose a 1 and a 2 sit side by side and share some of their covered squares. The difference between what each number demands often forces a specific square to be a mine, or forces another to be safe, even when neither number could tell you that on its own. This subtraction of one clue from another, sometimes called the counting or subset method, is the skill that separates a guesser from a solver.

  • If two numbers overlap, focus on the squares that belong to only one of them.
  • A higher number that shares all but one square with a lower number often pins that extra square as a mine.
  • Flag confidently once logic proves a mine, since flags turn the first rule into fresh safe squares.
  • Work the edges of opened regions, where numbers press against the unknown, rather than the settled interior.

A worked example of the pair trick

Picture a 1 with three covered neighbours, and next to it a 2 that shares two of those exact three covered squares and has no others. The 2 needs both of its two covered squares to be mines, since it has only two to work with. Those two squares are also two of the three squares belonging to the 1, and the 1 needs just one mine total. But the shared pair already supplies the mine the 1 requires, so the third, unshared square of the 1 must be safe. You can open it with certainty, no guessing involved.

When you genuinely must guess

Sometimes the deduction simply runs out, and a square is a true fifty-fifty with no logic left to break the tie. Strong players are not the ones who never guess; they are the ones who push deduction as far as it will go first, so that forced guesses are rare and, when unavoidable, taken at the best possible odds. Before gambling, it is worth counting the total mines remaining against the covered squares, because the global count sometimes resolves a corner that local numbers cannot. Patience shrinks the luck down to a minimum.

Why it endures

Minesweeper has outlived the operating systems it once shipped with because underneath its tense surface it is pure, honest deduction. There is no hidden information beyond the mines, no randomness once the board is set, and every safe square is, in principle, provable.
