What is Ripple Effect? It is a number logic puzzle where you fill each region with a run of small numbers, and any repeated number must keep its distance along every row and column.

What is Ripple Effect really testing? The grid is split into regions of different sizes, and you fill each region with the numbers 1 up to its size, using each once. A region of one cell simply holds a 1, a region of four holds 1, 2, 3 and 4 in some order, and so on. The twist that gives the puzzle its name is the ripple rule for repeats: if the same number appears twice in a single row or column, the gap between those two copies must be at least as large as the number itself. Two 3s in a row need at least three cells between them, so bigger numbers push each other far apart, spreading across the grid like ripples on water. Ripple Effect is also known as Hakyuu.

The rules of Ripple Effect

  • The grid is divided into regions, and each region is filled with the numbers 1 up to the number of cells it contains.
  • Every number in a region is used exactly once, so a region of size five holds 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
  • If the same number appears twice in a row, the number of cells between the two copies must be at least that number.
  • The same spacing rule applies down every column as well as across every row.
  • Unlike Sudoku, a row or column may repeat a number, as long as the ripple spacing is respected.

Picture a row that already contains a 1 in one region. Another region crossing the same row also needs a 1, and the ripple rule says two 1s must have at least one cell between them, so the second 1 cannot sit immediately beside the first. Now suppose both regions are large and each contains a 4. Those two 4s in the shared row must be separated by at least four cells, which in a nine-wide grid leaves only a couple of legal placements. By fixing the position of the big numbers first, the smaller ones fall into the gaps, and the region-by-region requirement to use 1 up to n then closes the remaining cells.

Beginner tactics for Ripple Effect

  1. Fill the tiny regions immediately. A one-cell region is always a 1, and a two-cell region is a 1 and a 2 in one of two orders.
  2. Place the largest numbers first. Big values need the widest spacing, so they have the fewest legal homes and pin the board down early.
  3. Read rows and columns together. A number that is blocked in its row may also be squeezed in its column, and combining the two often leaves one option.
  4. Remember repeats are allowed. Do not treat a row like Sudoku; equal numbers are fine as long as the spacing holds.
  5. Use the region size as a checklist. Track which of 1 to n a region still needs, and let those missing values guide the empty cells.

Sudoku fills each region with 1 to 9 and forbids any repeat in a row or column, full stop.
