So four of the eight neighbors are shaded, arranged as two clean pairs. Now suppose a nearby clue shows a plain zero; every one of its eight neighbors must be white, which may immediately force some of those earlier shaded cells to shift or confirm. Because the wall has to stay connected and cannot form a solid two-by-two square, these overlapping neighborhoods constantly check one another, and the correct pattern emerges without any guessing.

Beginner tactics for Tapa

  • Solve zero clues first; a clue of zero paints all of its neighbors white and removes them from consideration instantly.
  • Treat corner and edge clues as gifts, since they have fewer than eight neighbors and therefore far fewer arrangements.
  • Never complete a solid two-by-two block of shaded cells; if a placement would create one, that placement is wrong.
  • Keep the wall connected as you go, and reject any shaded cell that would cut a region off from the rest of the wall.
  • Overlap adjacent clues; two nearby clues share cells, so satisfying one often forces or forbids cells for the other.
