What Is Kakuro, and How Do You Play It
If a Sudoku and a crossword had a numbers-loving child, it would be Kakuro. It rewards the same careful logic, with a dash of quick addition to keep the mind busy.
The rules of Kakuro
Kakuro is played on a grid that looks a lot like a crossword, with black cells, white cells, and clue cells carrying numbers. Each unbroken run of white cells, whether across or down, has a target sum given in the neighbouring clue cell. You fill that run with the digits 1 through 9 so they add up to the target, and no digit may repeat within a single run. That no-repeat rule is the crucial one; without it Kakuro would be simple arithmetic, but with it the puzzle becomes a genuine exercise in logic where sums and positions constrain each other.
Magic blocks, the forced combinations
The heart of Kakuro strategy is that some sums can be made in only one way. A run of two cells totalling 3 can only be 1 and 2, in some order. A run of two totalling 17 can only be 8 and 9. A run of three totalling 6 can only be 1, 2 and 3. These uniquely determined runs are often called magic blocks, and they are where you start every Kakuro, because although you may not yet know the order of the digits, you know exactly which digits are present.
Where the two directions meet
The real deduction happens at the intersections, where an across run and a down run share a single white cell. That shared cell must satisfy the combinations of both runs at once. If an across magic block allows only 8 or 9 in a cell, and the crossing down block allows only 3 or 8, then the cell must be 8, the single value both runs permit. This cross-checking, sliding a cell possibilities against the run that crosses it, is exactly the same kind of reasoning that drives Sudoku, which is part of why the two puzzles appeal to the same people.
A short worked example
Picture an across run of two cells summing to 4, which can only be 1 and 3, since 2 and 2 would repeat. Now suppose the left of those two cells also begins a down run of two summing to 16, which can only be 7 and 9. The shared cell has to belong to both runs, but the pair 1 and 3 has no overlap at all with the pair 7 and 9. That contradiction tells you your reading of one of the sums is wrong, so you revisit the surrounding clues. Chasing these overlaps until they agree is how a Kakuro unravels.
How to make steady progress
A reliable order of attack keeps a Kakuro moving even when it looks dense at first.
- Scan for the shortest runs with the most extreme sums, since those have the fewest possible combinations and often only one.
- Pencil the allowed digit set beside each run you can pin down, the way you would keep candidate notes in Sudoku.
- Work the intersections, using the crossing run to eliminate digits a cell cannot take.
- Update the surrounding runs each time you place or eliminate a digit, since one fixed cell tightens everything it touches.
A reference worth keeping
Serious Kakuro solvers often keep a small table of magic blocks nearby, listing which sums of a given length force a unique set of digits. There are not many of them, and memorising the common ones, the extremes for two, three and four cell runs, speeds up your solving enormously. Over time you stop needing the table because the forced combinations become second nature, and you begin to see at a glance that a four-cell run summing to 30 must contain the higher digits. That growing fluency with the number sets is a large part of Kakuro satisfaction.
